Mechanical polishing refines the concrete itself. The result is shaped by the original slab, the stone within it and the level of exposure and sheen selected for the space. We work with homeowners, builders, architects and designers to make those decisions before work begins.

In a home, the discussion may begin with light, joinery, an extension or the relationship between living spaces. In a commercial project, it also needs to account for use, access, cleaning and the construction programme.

Exposure and sheen.
Exposure describes how much aggregate is revealed. Sheen describes how the surface reflects light. They are separate choices, guided by the concrete and the room.
- Nil / Surface Polish. Minimal aggregate exposure, retaining more of the slab’s surface character.
- Random Exposure. A varied reveal of stone, generally involving approximately 1–4 mm of grinding.
- Full Exposure. A more extensive aggregate reveal, generally involving approximately 4–5 mm of grinding.
Depths are a guide, not a promise of a uniform result. Discuss a quieter, lower-sheen look or a more reflective polish with Irwin; the achievable specification depends on the slab. Understand exposure and finish terminology.

We are based in Geelong and travel to projects across the city, the Bellarine Peninsula and the Surf Coast. Our selected work includes a surface-polished interior at Manifold Heights and an exterior Pavilion finish at Highton.
Outdoor areas need their own specification. Pavilion is our exterior finish; a highly polished interior surface should not simply be repeated beside a pool or across an exposed terrace.

How much does polished concrete cost in Geelong?
Each quote depends on the slab’s condition, floor area, exposure, edges, access and project timing. Share your plans or photographs and Irwin will discuss the scope before preparing a manual quote. Read our cost guide for the information that helps make quotes comparable.
Can my existing concrete be polished?
It may be suitable, but previous coverings, repairs, cracks and the slab itself need to be assessed. A test area may help establish achievable exposure and appearance. Where mechanical polishing is not suitable, a specialist sealed finish may be considered.
Are surface polish and full exposure different products?
They are different ways of revealing the concrete within a mechanically polished floor. Nil / Surface Polish keeps exposure minimal, Random Exposure reveals a varied amount of stone, and Full Exposure reveals more aggregate. The slab determines what can be achieved.
Can I choose how glossy the floor is?
Sheen is discussed separately from aggregate exposure. Tell Irwin whether you prefer a quieter reflection or a glossier finish so the specification can be considered for the slab and the intended use.
Do you finish exterior concrete?
Yes. Pavilion finishes are available for exterior spaces, with the texture and protection considered for the location and intended use. View the Highton Pavilion project for genuine examples.
When should my builder contact you?
For a new slab, before it is poured. This allows the concrete appearance, exposure expectations, joints, access, protection and programme to be discussed with the builder and relevant project specialists.
