Is polished concrete slippery?

Describe the conditions before choosing the finish. Will the floor usually be dry? Could it receive rain, pool water, cooking oils or cleaning residues? Will people be barefoot or wearing shoes? The answers help the project team assess the surface in context.

A finish chosen for a dry living area should not automatically continue through a wet entrance or around a pool. The visual relationship can still be considered while each area receives an appropriate specification.

For areas with a slip-resistance requirement, ask the designer or relevant project professional to identify the applicable classification and testing approach. Confirm that any evidence relates to the proposed finish and relevant wet or dry conditions.

The Australian Building Codes Board provides guidance for stairways, landings and ramps. Requirements vary with the application; a single rating should not be assumed to cover every part of a home or commercial space. Slab Studio does not claim a universal slip rating for all polished concrete or Pavilion finishes.

Gloss, aggregate visibility and the word “non-slip” are not substitutes for an agreed, evidence-based specification.

For exterior areas, Slab Studio offers Pavilion concrete finishes. These are considered separately from interior mechanical polishing, with the setting, expected moisture and intended use informing the finish.

Keep to the cleaning instructions for the specified finish. Remove spills promptly and dry the floor after cleaning. At commercial premises, a clear cleaning and spill-response routine matters alongside the original material selection.

Tell your flooring specialist if you intend to change a cleaner, surface treatment or maintenance method. An attractive floor also needs a care routine suited to its use. For a new project, include those responsibilities in the handover discussion.

Discuss the rooms and outdoor areas with Irwin before selecting a finish. Where testing or specialist advice is needed, establish that early with the project team.
